Silicon carbide bearings are not as readily available as their silicon nitride counterparts. This is because many of the benefits silicon carbide have to offer are similar to that of silicon nitride. This includes a huge weight savings when compared to bearing steel. The big differences come in corrosion resistance. Silicon carbide bearings are best suited for the world’s most toxic and chemically corrosive environments.
Unlike most ceramic materials silicon carbide is electrically conductive which can be used as a benefit.
Like other ceramic bearings, silicon carbide is non-conductive, can run lubrication free, high hardness and low torque. Although these bearings are not as available, UNASIS brand bearings can be supplied most readily available in popular metric and imperial sizes of deep groove and angular contact ball bearings.
