Silverthin thin-section bearings are cost efficient and space saving. They offer significant cost-reduction opportunities by allowing engineers to downsize designs and reduce weight. Silverthin thin section bearings range in size from 25mm in diameter to more than 1000mm, and are also available in inch sizes. Silverthin routinely manufactures large volume orders but retains the flexible production engineering capability to produce thin section bearings for both prototyping and small-run applications when customers have special requirements. Whereas standard bearings are designed so that the bearing thickness increases proportionately as the bore size gets bigger, in the case of thin section bearings, the sectional thickness of the bearing remains fixed even though the bore size increases. Silverthin offers an aerospace-certified relubrication facility for the special lubrication of Silverthin thin section bearings to customer-specific requirements across all applications. This has proven especially useful in the ultra high vacuum and space exploration sectors. Silverthin thin section bearings can be manufactured in many special materials including 440C stainless steel, M50 tool steel and BG42 a speciality alloy. Custom balls options are also available in alternative materials such as silicon nitride ceramic, M50 tool steel, industrial ruby and BG42 speciality alloy to suit challenging applications. Standard bearing rings can be coated with nodular thin dense chrome (NTDC) offering a corrosion resistance equivalent to 440C stainless steel while maintaining the properties of 52100 bearing steel. Thin dense chrome offers extreme hardness, typically 70 – 78 Rockwell C and thus offers significant extensions to bearing life. Unlike other manufacturers, Silverthin has no minimum order quantity for this process.
